Jodi Picoult crafted a powerfully emotional story that will make readers ponder the controversial topics of stem cell research, organ donations, and cloning and the moral impacts these issues have on family values and moral choices.
What would I have done had I been in the mother’s shoes? I wonder if I would have made those same choices to keep one child alive at the expense of the other child or would I have let nature takes its course because of the psychological impact that might be made on the donor child.
In response to my friend Linda K, in regards to the ending of this book:
I thought we were supposed to set the world on fire if nothing else comes to mind. I agree, that the ending was too quick and not the expected outcome. I did feel a bit cheated and thought that there would be a little more of a fight beside handing over the kidney after all. Maybe an alternative ending would have been that Anna lived, gave a kidney, Kate dies because that is what happens to cancer patients showing the kidney gift was the waste of an organ, and Anna is wheelchair-bound because of the accident. Oh, that would be too realistic.
