If We Were Having Coffee I’d Tell You About Surviving Christmas and 2016

How many times have I said I will start Christmas shopping in July?

The last-minute shopping panic is over, I’m so glad life can return to normal even though time is limited due to school work. I have one year and six months left to finish school, or three plus if I continue on to a Master’s Degree. For the past six months, I have been sticking my nose in a textbook every night, pushing myself to learn topics that I don’t really enjoy. Math was never my favorite subject, that means Finance, Accounting, and anything that requires equations including economics must be learned by use of strict discipline. Those A’s and B’s I have gotten in any of those classes were more than earned. I worked hard, very hard, for those grades.

Maybe the worst classes are almost over for the time being. – sigh –

What’s in store for 2017 Classes?

Microsoft Office 2013 – I am really looking forward to the next term, almost to the point of excitement. For the past six years, I’ve been playing with Office on my own, stumbling around the software while learning how to format eBooks and print books for publishing. Imagine what I could do if I learned to master the software?

My other class for the next term is Science I. I liked science in high school. Physics and Biology were my strengths. Chemistry falls into the same category as math, with massive distaste. Give me finance over chemistry any day.

Term 4 will give me a second round in Science II. Microeconomics is my other course. Hopefully, I will enjoy the business element of economics over the world element.

Summer I will prove to be interesting with America’s Themes and Dreams and Marketing. Maybe by the time I get to the Marketing class, I will be ready to release a new book. I have several works in progress at this stage.

So far, 2017 is looking to be an exciting year.

Summer 2 may start to shape and change my future career with Human Resource Management and Sociology. With one term left to complete to fulfill what is needed to complete an Associate Degree in Business. The rest of the year will build on my Bachelor’s Degree.

All these classes and working full time does not leave me much time for writing nor doing the things that I love doing. At the same time, I am following the dream of acquiring a degree which I have wanted to do for the past thirty years. I can only imagine where I would be today if I had started on my career earlier in life.

If it hadn’t been for Mike making that call to my high school that day to inquire about getting my transcript, I might have continued to put my education off.

I expect to have a Bachelor’s Degree by the time I am 55 years old. (Probably before that age).

2016 was an eventful year. It is true, when a door closes, a window of opportunity opens. You just need to learn to find those windows in the places you least expect to find them located.

If We Were Having Coffee – I Would Tell You – About My Current Events

This appears to be an active year for me. I’ve been so busy while this year is flying by. Where did summer go? I can’t believe that fall has already fallen upon us. I love the fall foliage, but I hate seeing bare trees later in the season. I’m not a fan of winter either. Spring and summer are my favorite seasons.

First Off – 2nd Time Grandma

I’m a grandma again!

My daughter gave birth a week ago to a bouncing baby girl. Ava is healthy and happy. She was 6lbs 5 oz. and 18 ½ inches long. I hear she is already lifting her head on her own. Her big sister, Jasmine, is so proud to be a big sister. She helps her mommy feed Ava. I’m not sure if she is changing her diapers yet, I will find out next weekend when we go visit her.

Jasmine is also learning to do cartwheels. For a six-year-old she almost did a perfect cartwheel in a video my daughter posted. I couldn’t help but smile when she did a headstand against the wall for her last part of her performance.

Great Job Jasmine!

My Classes Continue

I’m still enrolled at Franklin Pierce University

My third term began two weeks ago. This term I have Principles of Accounting I and Composition I. I like them both. When I first signed up for these classes, I wasn’t sure how I was going to like accounting since it deals with working with numbers.  I hadn’t been a fan of Principles of Finance and struggled through that class. It wasn’t my cup of tea, but I did pass the course with flying colors after working hard at learning the curriculum.

Accounting is sort of fun. It is task oriented, which I don’t mind, but I like seeing how different accounts affect each other to make the final balance. I could be possible pick this as a major when I sign up for continuing on with a Bachelor Degree.

The composition course is fun too. I knew this course would be to my liking. I love writing, but all my experience has been with fiction and blogging. This course makes me think about issues and how to develop an argument for an essay or a report on the subject matter. It is technical writing. I can make this class work, but I prefer fiction writing overall.

My Goal: to make the Dean’s List once again.

For the past two terms, I have made the Dean’s List. I did this even though I wasn’t crazy about the course matter I was learning. The class on careers was interesting, and I aced that class easily, Finance, on the other hand, was to me, boring. I had to fight to stay away while reading the textbook. There was a lot of reading too.

Online College Classes are equal to homeschooling.

The last term I had Principles of Management and Business Law. Business Law was parched reading. I think I did fall asleep several times while reading the textbook. Management was a bit easier to comprehend, but that too was a struggle to stay awake with the amount of reading I had to do.

I did ace both classes regardless with a higher score than the previous term.

So far this term, the grades are up there. Hopefully, I can keep them there.

Work in Progress

I have begun working on a new story. You can watch my progress in the sidebar on the right. Lemons, Dilemmas, and Oh Baby is a contemporary romance. It is a slow go this is naturally due to my limited time I can work on the manuscript.

Thanks for stopping by for Coffee. Come back again soon.

If We Were Having Coffee – I Would Tell You Why I Write?

Writing is an expression, and I express myself much more freely in writing than oral. I like stories, and love to tell them. I don’t write to make money. Nor do I expect to make a lot of money. Things happen, and I am inspired by day to day life.

I could overhear a conversation that makes me think of a similar incident. It may not have happened to me, but maybe to someone else. It could spark a warning that I need to convey to those who might only hear it in the form of a story. As in “Road Salt”, four teens take a road trip while stealing cars. One of the teens is an addict that uses the substance called Bath Salts. It has a devastating effect on the other three teens. Thankfully the drug isn’t as widely used now a day, but I wrote the story when there was a cry to the public to become knowledgeable of its devastating effects on the families, friends and the individuals that were using the substance.

“Aaron and Keja came about from my love of animals. I kept thinking of what my dog and cat would say if they happened to hold a conversation. Fantasy is one of my favorite genres to read, so naturally, it would become one of my favorite to write. I was a JRR Tolkien fan while in high school. When I started my Orgarlan series, I wanted to write a fantasy series that was different from the usual high-fantasy we have come to know. So I made the Orcs and Goblins the good guys, the humans minorities, and the elves to be the enemy.

Perspectives are always subject to change.

The next book, “Witch Book”, was kind of a fluke. I wanted to attempt some more poetry while writing fiction, which I did as a spell. I fell in love with the story and wrote the whole thing in ninety days.

Yes, I know, I need to expand the series. But I became involved in Romance Writers of America, so the fantasy series took a temporary back seat while I learned to write a new genre. My next goal is to advance my writing by integrating romance into fantasy and adventures.

My writing has slowed down; it is only a temporary situation. Currently, I am attending school and will return to writing when I am done with my degree. Though, now that I don’t have the time to write, I want to write. It will be a challenge to schedule writing time in the coming months, but I may do so anyway.

You can’t stop the muse when it wants to let loose.

If We Were Having Coffee – #WeekendCoffeeShare

I’m well overdue for a monthly coffee share. I have so much to share. So much has happened since we last sat down together. Where do I begin?

Back in April, I returned to work after being in the unemployment line for 8 weeks. That vacation set me back financially. I won’t be taking any long vacations for a while. The whole incident left me in a bad sort of way. I couldn’t write, not one single word. I was probably having a bout of depression for having spent those last 9+ years of my life working for a company that came up with a silly reason to let me go.

It wasn’t because I was a poor worker. I had excellent attendance, a hard worker, even met quotas that were unreasonable high. They were stressing everyone out with continually reminding us that there was another layoff cut coming down the line. The reason they gave me for letting me go was – wait for it – my age – pff! They couldn’t come up with anything better than that. Ugh! Who ever heard of such a thing? Isn’t that discriminatory? I thought they couldn’t use age for determining whether to keep a person as a worker.

Then they called me back – But this time as a temp. I had no choice, it was either take the job or lose the unemployment benefits. So, of course, I said okay. It is bad enough to return to your previous employer 8 weeks later as a temp, losing 9+ years of employee benefits – 4 weeks vacation – as of this past week, they have once again changed the playing field. Now they no longer pay temp employees holiday pay.

I agree, it is time for a career change. This leads to my latest endeavor.

I returned to school! 35 years later, but here I am, a 50+ college bound student. Now that I’m enrolled in school and working full-time as a temp, I have no time to write. What happens when you have no time to write?

That’s right, you want to write. I have thought of all sorts of stuff to write about while doing my homework. I’d have to tell my muse, “not now, I’m busy. Can’t you see, I’ve too much homework to do?”

How’s that coffee of yours, do you need a refill?

One of my courses is Career Image. I discovered that my best match career is writing. Go figure J

Now we are working on career goals, and I got thinking…

The goal for the rest of the year for writing: Blog once a week. That will take care of the muse and keep me in writing practice, and get these fingers exercising. I’m shooting for Sunday posts, which is my best day for getting things done unless my work schedule was to change suddenly. Who can say at this time?

I’d tell you why such a glum face.

I’m one of those writers who needs to keep a full-time day job besides writing. It is how I connect to the world. Interacting with people is what keeps me going. It is where I can come up with new ideas. Inspiration comes from the daily interaction with co-workers.

So why so glum, you ask?

For the past few weeks, I was part of a workforce reduction. That’s right. I was displaced and left to scour the internet in search of a new day job. It’s not so easy to do these days, that is unless you have some sort of degree.

Last week, out of frustration, I applied to go back to school to get that needed degree. I should hear back within the coming weeks. It does look promising. I also got my job back – pfff – as a Temp, that is.

I used to believe that companies would reward their workers for loyalty and good work ethics. I guess that isn’t the case anymore. Or at least, at this company. I know, you ask, why go back to them? I had no choice. I need the job and the interaction if I’m going to write.

If We Were Having Coffee Right Now…I would mention

If we were having coffee right now… I would tell you how much I hate being sick. I thought I was doing the right thing by getting the flu shot like I’ve done for the past six or seven years. Once again, I got sick within a day or two after getting the shot. You can keep telling me all you want about how there is no way a person can get the flu from the shot. I’m beginning to believe otherwise. Not only did I get sick, but my mother got sick too. She received her flu shot the day after I got mine and we both became ill together. We got the runny nose, post nasal drip, the bad cough, and couldn’t stay awake when we weren’t coughing up a storm. My chest hurt for two days. I even missed 2 days of work. I hate missing work.

If we were having coffee right now… I would complain about it getting cold outside. I know it officially is fall, but couldn’t summer last just a bit longer? I really didn’t mind the hot weather we were having. At least we finally got some much-needed rain. My apple tree was glowing. I saw it hiccuping green leaves into the air. Maybe next year we’ll finally get a decent crop of apples.

If we were having coffee right now… I would tell you how much I don’t like politics. Yes, I vote, but I won’t discuss the political matters at hand. I won’t even get started on gun issues. I get it, but I won’t go there. I now turn off the news when there is a debate or a mass shooting. I can’t control either of these except I can choose to listen or not.

If we were having coffee right now… I would mention to you about my book, What Karla Wants, is free on Google Play. This book has been tweaked, edited, and recompiled to the point that there isn’t anything left to do to it to make it any better. I have to accept it as it is. I think I made a lot of changes to it in the past year. You may not even recognize it. The overall storyline is still the same, but like I said, it’s been tweaked. I like how it came out. I even like the new title. I had to rename it, I knew the readers were right about how the title wasn’t good enough. If you haven’t read the book, now is your chance.

If we were having coffee right now… I would tell you about how close I am to finishing up that Barbie Bed Doll I’ve been working on since June. I started crocheting it right after having my surgery. I needed something light to keep my hands busy while I was recuperating. The doll is made with #10 crochet cotton. That’s the fine thread that is sometimes used to make doilies, tablecloths, and runners, or lacing. It usually takes me about 2 or 3 months to complete a doll. When I’m done with this project, I will finish up an afghan I was working on before I had to operation. After that, I’ve got a quilt to work on during the winter months. I’ll be nice and warm under it.

If You and I Were Having Coffee – I would

If we were having coffee right now… I would tell you that I’m back on a sewing machine at work. Yes, I do have a day job like the average American. I don’t stay home and write all day. I’m not sure if I would want to leave my day job. I like my co-workers. Where else would I come up with ideas for plot lines? Those gals help me. They brainstorm, beta read, and cheer each story on after I publish it. I guess some writers would envy my work and writing relationship. One of the things I decided right off the bat when I started writing, I would make sure that I treated my day job the same way I treat my writing. Seriously, I care about what I do, and I let my co-workers know that too. I’m not the type of person who goes to work just for the paycheck. If you’re a writer and working a daytime job, take pride in that job. You will be surprised how much help it is to have a positive attitude at work. Believe me, the higher-ups notice. It’s an image you not only want to portray but keep.

If we were having coffee right now… I would tell you I went to the doctor’s the other day for a check up. She said my A1C is coming down, but not down enough. I’m to continue doing what I’ve already done, but I also have to focus on losing some more weight. Bah- I’m tired of doctors. I feel healthy and happy, why do I need to keep going back. We’ll see if I return in six months. At least she never needed to put me on any insulin medication.

If we were having coffee right now… I would have to tell you about the pup, Keelaa. She ran down the driveway today, and across the street. Little bugger! Now she’s grounded. We think she saw a black and white cat that looked like her deceased friend, Gracie. Every time she sees this black and white cat, she starts barking like mad, it’s as though she were trying to call the cat to come home. Poor pup doesn’t know that we had no choice but to put Gracie down. She was almost 20 years old and having serious health problems.

If we were having coffee right now… I would tell you about the book I’m reading. It’s the fourth book in the Game of Thrones. I won’t tell you any spoilers. But, what I will tell you, is that I love the way GRRM writes. I like how he builds his characters, settings, and plots. After this book, there is one more. He has a sixth book coming out. I just don’t know when its release date is. When I hear, I’ll let you all know.

If we were having coffee right now… I would tell you that I’m a Walking Dead fan. They say that the new spin-off, Fear the Walking Dead is slipping in ratings. I think this could be associated with the fact that there is active drug addiction being portrayed in this story hitting too close to home for many folks. It can even, unknowingly, trigger addicts to begin using. There should be a word of caution at the beginning of episodes, warning about the subject of drug addiction. Triggers are real, and there are too many people suffering addiction to ignore involuntary triggers on TV.

Oh, I got to go… I think we’ll meet again for another coffee session.
