Low Book Sales Getting You Down?

So, you’re a new author and you have published your first book. But that was six months or so ago. Are you feeling glum about those book sales?

I have seen this time and time again over the past few months. I have even had other writers ask me how do you get your book into Wal-Mart. Say – What???

That is right. They figured that since they paid the big bucks to have their book published at one of those vanity houses that their book should be showing up on the Wal-Mart store shelves. I had to tell them that it doesn’t happen that way.

So see there, you are not alone…

Almost every author goes through this. It does not matter if they self-published, used a small press, or a vanity publishing house. Most new authors expect to be on the top of the charts coming out of the gate. Well, let me tell you this, it does not happen that way… No it does not….

You have to work at this people. It takes time to build up that platform of yours and the only way to build it is by one brick or book at a time. In the meantime you need to market your book without spamming it. Oh and don’t forget to put that book into eBook format. This now is 70% of almost every author’s sales in the current publishing world.

How do you market without spamming??? (I will talk about that tomorrow)

Have you ever noticed that most of those best-selling authors have published four or more books before making it onto the charts? And, usually those are the ones who have used a traditional publisher and have an agent.

Does that mean you should give up?

Nope.

I will agree, it is tough out there. We all have stories to tell and we are all saying read mine, no read mine, no please read mine….

What else can you do?

This is what I see the publishing market as:

So who is bound to succeed?

The author who decides to stick with their writing and pound out book after book, they are the ones who will eventually succeed with their writing.

Remember, the more books you write the better you will get. And, the more people see your name out there the more curious they will become to see what you are writing about.

Keep your head up and your fingers on those keys and keep on writing!

Now People! Get out there and write your book!

My Week as an Unshelled Nut

This is my week of birthdays.

My son’s is today, he turned 25. My daughter’s is on Wednesday, she will be 23.

Happy Birthday to the two of them J

Our plans for the week were slightly changed when we received the news on Friday that the Jaffrey fireworks were being cancelled for the year due to a bomb threat. A friend recently told me that the event may still happen this year, I kind of hope so, we really enjoy going to the show every year even if it is kind of costly.

The plan was to celebrate our son’s 25th birthday while we were at the fireworks. I mean, what a better time than that for a milestone birthday?

Instead we had a very quiet birthday for him at home with a Dark Chocolate Fudge cake with Chocolate fudge frosting. It was a good way to sweeten up the day.

We really still need to make our yearly visit to see our daughter. But with the rising cost of gas I’m not sure if we are going to be able to make it this year. She is a five hour drive away, that being one way. We usually make the trip up and back in one day.

We will see. It would be nice to see my two year old granddaughter. They grow up so fast…

Now for ROW80 Check in:

I managed to write a whooping total of 1k words this week.

It was going good when I started recording my daily activities. Then I stopped doing that and the writing went downhill from there.

Then the other day I began playing with this WordPress blog. I think I wasted two days on it while trying to figure out the site. Hopefully I have a handle on it now.

I will once again attempt to keep track of my daily activities to see if my writing habits change. But, I have to finish making my Bread and Butter pickles.

Oh, and yesterday I spent it making a batch of Spaghetti sauce from the tomatoes in our garden. I just love bumper crops, don’t you?
